Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to discuss the role of work in the transition towards an ecosocialist economy. The first part of the paper is devoted to analyze the role of work in human societies and its particular form in capitalism. Capitalist societies generate an erroneous vision of work in several senses: non- marked work is ignored, differences between different types of work are masked and there is a confussion of objectives (job creation in place of needs satisfaction). The second part is devoted to analyze the labour roots of inequalities. The discussion includes social mechanisms of legitimation, the role atributed to labour productivity and the transfomations generated in neoliberal capitalism. Last part is devoted to propose lines of action in order to replace the role of work in a transition.
